Wouldn't
it be nice
?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress where service was based on perception
of duty to nation and neighbors and everyone in Congress had made
the pilgrimage to Washington to serve their country and their neighbors
instead of themselves?
Wouldn't
it be nice if even those with opposing philosophical views used
as a starting point the best interests of the country?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress to which a national defense
establishment was more important than the old boy network of mutual
back scratching to bring home pork at the expense of perhaps dozens
of traded votes to others?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had politicians who didn't need focus groups
to determine right from wrong?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had politicians who heeded principle instead
of polls?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress which paid more attention to
working out the details of legislation to be sure it was in accordance
with the Constitution and for the best interests of the country
instead of a way to buy our votes with our own money?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress where all members insisted on
reading and understanding each and every piece of legislation before
voting on it?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress who used staff to help members
form judgments and objective opinions instead of permitting staff
to do the members' work for them?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress which rode herd on the bureaucracy
to keep it from growing out of control and expanding year after
year, intruding itself into the lives of citizens everywhere?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress which pursued the goal of national
solvency with the same zeal as it does its own pay, perks and pensions,
posturing, pork and personal power?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress where leadership was based on
ability rather than seniority?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we had a Congress where leaders were selected
for personal integrity and ability to distinguish right from wrong,
desirable from undesirable, fact from fabrication, honor from infamy;
to distinguish dignity from debasement, decency from dishonor, virtue
from villainy and where members themselves valued these distinctions?
It wouldn't
just be nice, it would be fabulous! Pipe dream? Not
at all!
These questions
relate to the kind of Congress the Framers envisioned and
the kind we had at one time until our country fell victim
of what can be called "Liberal Elitism." Liberal Elitism
is that horrible disease consuming our country the godless,
socialist-communist mentality which has as its goal control over
our very lives (assuming its goals aren't even worse: betrayal of
our nation). Our country, our institutions and our government have
been stolen from us by Liberal Elitists. They are the disease. They
are the termites eating away at our culture and our country. And
a primary location of the most ugly symptoms of this disease is
Washington, DC.
Our nation
was founded two hundred plus years ago by a few dozen giants:
godly men of intellect, courage, vision and dedication, men who
for all their differences had one thing in common a desire
to serve what they perceived to be the best interests of their new
country. That one attitude of service if we but had it today
would put us light years ahead of where we are now.
Giants are
pretty hard to find in public life these days. Yet in a nation of
280 million people there are giants aplenty. It's just that most
are reluctant to come forward to offer themselves up for public
service in the circus atmosphere that prevails in our seats of government
in these times.
There is
an answer for all this. Congressional leaders fear that
answer. Liberal Elitists dread it. Conservative leaders ignore
it, as do most conservative writers. That answer is Term Limitation.
Congressional term limits will remove that reluctance to participate
on the part of the giants we have today, and we will once again
have the benefit of our best people to attack our problems and solve
them with God's help.
What congressional
leaders fear, Liberal Elitists dread and conservatives ignore, the
American people clamor for. Why did third party candidates
attract so much attention? Because the American people are looking
for outside help in dealing with Liberal Elitism, and they are not
finding it with the mainstream parties.
Americans want
their country back. The people are way ahead of the curve on this
most vital issue. They have supported term limitation with overwhelming
margins for years.
All this is
very attainable. Not easy, but attainable. It will require members
of Congress to vote for a constitutional amendment limiting their
own terms. Impossible, you say? Not at all. It's already been
done. The pattern is out there, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where
members of the Louisiana Legislature voted to limit their own
terms and by huge margins making Louisiana the
only non-initiative state in the country to thus amend its constitution.
Yes, Louisiana. The electorate ratified the amendment overwhelmingly.
Wouldn't
it be nice if this should come about?
Wouldn't
it be nice if we were to get congressional term limitation in
our U. S. Constitution?
It can happen,
but not without God's help. (See 2nd Chronicles 7:14) Yet it can
come about if we will but seek His help and be obedient to His will.
We should remind ourselves daily of the enormity of God's gifts
to us in this land. Years ago Winston Churchill said:
"We
must recognize that we have a great treasure to guard; that the
inheritance in our possession represents the prolonged achievement
of the centuries; that there is not one of our simple uncounted
rights today for which better men than we are have not died on
the scaffold or the battlefield
"
Even so with
us today. There is a very large element of stewardship here. As
a people, we have done a poor job of preserving for those who follow
us what has been handed down to us across the centuries as a result
of God's providence (on both sides of the Atlantic) and if we do
not improve dramatically then history will deal with us harshly
for having dissipated our children's inheritance while it was in
our possession.
It is time
for us to rid ourselves of Liberal Elitism, that virulent plague
which infests our country. We will have our children to answer to
if we do not.
Wouldn't
it be wonderful if TOGETHER, Americans
could bring all this about?
All it takes
is leadership. And work.
