Rep. John Shirts Files Term Limits Resolution in Idaho
Boise, ID – Rep. John Shirts (district 9A) has filed House Concurrent Resolution 23 (HCR23) to add Idaho to the list of states calling on Congress to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Like the other state efforts, HCR23 makes it clear to Congress that if they fail, Idaho and its fellow states will propose the amendment themselves. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
HCR23 has a groundswell of support in the Idaho legislature. Many state lawmakers committed their support by signing a pledge to cosponsor Rep. Shirts’ resolution.
“It’s time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent, ” said Philip Blumel, USTL President. “Term limits will help restore trust in our government and ensure that power is returned to the hands of the citizens.” HCR23 has been assigned to a committee for a vote and will then make its way to the house floor. Once HCR23 passes both the house and senate chambers, Idaho will join other states in the call for a national convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress.
Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions and approve the term limits amendment language, the measure must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
