U.S. Term Limits Poised for Success in West Virginia

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national movement to limit terms for elected officials, has received commitments from sponsors in both chambers of the West Virginia Legislature. State Senator Ed Gaunch (District 8) and Delegate Jeffrey Pack (District 28) each committed to sponsor identical term limits convention Article V resolutions for the sole purpose of limiting the terms of Congress members. This poises the Mountain State to tackle term limits as soon as the legislative session begins on January 9, 2019.

Both lawmakers also signed the term limits pledge. Provided to all state legislators and candidates, the pledge reads, “I pledge that as a member of the state legislature, I will support and vote for the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the limited purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”

Asked why he is passionate about the Article V application, Senator Gaunch said, “A career in politics should be two or three terms, not a lifetime!”

Delegate Pack also commented on the resolution saying, “Its time to drain the swamp of politicians who are out of touch with hard working West Virginians. The best way to do that is by establishing term limits on Congress.”

According to Nick Tomboulides, Executive Director of USTL, the best chance to impose term limits on congress is through an Article V Convention of state legislatures. “While we’d like for Congress to take the high road and impose limits on itself, our goal is to trigger a term limits convention,” claims Tomboulides. “That is why it is important to get support from state legislators,” he added. Once proposed, the amendment must be ratified by 38 states.

Tomboulides notes, “More than 82% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Gaunch and Pack know this and are willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”

USTL volunteer and proud West Virginian, Kathie Hess Crouse commented, “I’m proud to have Senator Ed Gaunch representing me, my district, my state, and working to drain the swamp by supporting U.S. Term Limits. He is a great man and he loves West Virginia, the people, our liberties and freedoms.”

According to the last nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, conducted in January 2018, term limits enjoys wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis states, “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups.  An overwhelming 82% of voters approve of a constitutional amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress.”
