Author’s note: If there are any candidates reading this, pay attention! You’re always trying to solve the puzzle of “How do I win Democrat votes if I’m a Republican?” or “How do I sway Republicans in my district if I’m a Democrat?” Embracing term limits will help you bridge that gap. And now onto the polling…
Convincing data on the public demand for congressional term limits was released by VeraQuest research this week.
Their research shows that 74 percent of Americans – Democrats AND Republicans alike — support term limits on Congress. 84 percent of citizens support keeping term limits on the President and a majority back term limits for Supreme Court justices. This isn’t the first time support for term limits across party lines has eclipsed 70 percent. Earlier this year, Rasmussen reported that over 70 percent of Americans want congressional term limits and in 2013 Gallup found that 75 percent support term limits on Congress. Very few policy issues ever reach this kind of bipartisan agreement, let alone a consistent consensus.
With the near-unanimous view that politics should not be a career- now couldn’t be a better time to show friends and family that the term limits movement is growing and the data is piling up in our favor.
Two-term Florida Congressman Ron DeSantis made national headlines this month for introducing a term limits bill that grandfathers incumbents in, thereby removing the main obstacle to passage. Is it a solution to the gridlock? That remains to be seen. But DeSantis’ efforts are proving that some members of Congress will hear us on term limits if we make our message impossible to ignore.
