U.S. Term Limits Endorses Supreme Court Term Limits Act
U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the nation’s oldest and largest pro-term limits group, today endorsed a proposal by Democratic lawmakers to adopt term limits for the U.S. Supreme Court. House Resolution 8424, filed by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), would allow appointees to spend no more than 18 years on the Supreme Court before having to find a different role within the federal bench. It would not be applied to current justices.
“Life tenure in any elected or unelected position is bad public policy,” said USTL President Philip Blumel. “The American people are tired of watching the confirmation process devolve into a partisan circus. Term limits would allow the Court to perform its duties without becoming politicized.”
While the Constitution provides that judges shall hold their offices “during good behavior,” which has been construed to mean life tenure, this does not mean Supreme Court term limits require a constitutional amendment. By keeping judges within the federal bench under “Senior Justice” status, HR 8424 follows the Constitution while delivering term limits for the American people.
Polls show that term limits remain the most popular and bipartisan issue in the United States. Recent polling from PSB reveals that 77 percent of Americans favor term limits on Supreme Court justices, while a McLaughlin and Associates poll showed that 82 percent favor term limits on members of Congress.
“This is not a Republican issue or a Democratic issue,” said Blumel. “This is an American issue. We call on leaders in the House and Senate to pass the Supreme Court Term Limits Act right away.”
