More Than Half of All 2020 West Virginia State Legislative Candidates Pledge to Term Limit Congress
Charleston, WV – U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national movement to limit terms for elected officials, is currently gathering support from state and federal lawmakers across the nation. Its mission is to enact term limits on Congress via an amendment to the U.S. Constitution and to implement and defend term limits on state legislatures. 113 West Virginia candidates for the West Virginia legislature, from multiple party affiliations, have pledged to support this effort, amounting to more than 50% of all state legislative candidates running in November 3rd elections.
The West Virginia candidates who have signed include Randy Smith (senate 14), Jeff Pack (house 28), Geoff Foster (house 15), Tim Tomblin (house 24), Mike Angelucci (house 50), Bob Plymale (senate 5), and Patrick Martin (senate 12), Josh Holstein (house 23), Jack Woodrum (senate 10), and Rebecca Polis (senate 13), and Dalton Haas (house 3). The full list of pledge signers can be found here.
U.S. Term Limits State Director Aaron Dukette commented on the pledges, saying, “The dysfunction we see in Congress makes obvious the reasons why West Virginians of all political stripes are fed up with career politicians. Term limits will afford voters the opportunity to vote for fresh faces and new ideas.”
The U.S. Term Limits amendment convention pledge reads, “I pledge that as a member of the state legislature, I will support and vote for the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the limited purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”
The resolution has come to the verge of final passage in each of the two previous legislative sessions. Dukette said he expects it to pass in 2021, noting, “81% of West Virginia voters want their state legislators to pass this resolution. These candidates get it and are listening to the will of their constituents. This is a mandate for the West Virginia legislature to pass the resolution next session.”
According to the last nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates conducted in November 2018, term limits enjoy wide bipartisan support in West Virginia. McLaughlin’s analysis states, “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups.”
