Aventura City, Florida — Voters in Aventura City resoundingly denied mayors from serving 16 years total on the City Commission. The mail-in only vote, tabulated on April 27th, was overwhelmingly in favor of forcing the mayor to sit out four years before running for reelection as a city commissioner. The mayor is a voting member on the city commission. The ballot question was recommended by the Charter Revision Commission.

Revised Term Limits Provision Concerning Service as Commissioner by a Term Limited Mayor
The City Charter currently requires a 4 year break in service in order for a person who has served 8 consecutive years as Mayor to be eligible to run for election as Commissioner. The Charter Revision Commission proposes that the Charter be amended to eliminate that 4 year required break in service under those circumstances, and to allow combined mayoral and commission service for up to 16 consecutive years.
Shall the Charter amendment be adopted?
The results show the people of Aventura overwhelmingly support term limits of eight years on their city commissioners.
U.S. Term Limits applauds the voters for rejecting the term limits extension.
