Louisiana Senate Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Baton Rouge, LA — The Louisiana Senate Government Affairs committee just passed a resolution calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to term limit Congress. House Concurrent Resolution 51 (HCR51), led by sponsor and committee chair Senator Sharon Hewitt (District 1), passed as favorable by a vote of 3 to 1. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit U.S. Term Limits.
HCR51 is just one step away from Louisiana being the next state to call the term limits on Congress convention. It must pass the senate chamber before session ends next week. The concurrent measure in the state house, sponsored by Rep. Mark Wright, passed last month by an overwhelming margin.
Nearly 45 Louisiana legislators have signed the term limits pledge promising to support the congressional term limits effort including seven state senators.
Once passed in the state senate, Louisiana will have the distinction of being among the first states to file an application for the term limits convention, joining Florida, Missouri, Alabama, and West Virginia. When 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions and approve the term limits amendment, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
