Johnson County Commission Board Calls on Legislature to Pass Term Limits Resolution
Mountain City, Tennessee – At its November meeting, the Johnson County Commission Board officially called on the Tennessee legislature to pass an Article V application to propose a Term Limits Amendment for members of the U.S. House and Senate. The Commission Board passed the resolution unanimously.
Aaron Dukette, Central Regional Director for U.S. Term Limits, commented on the resolution saying, “It is the Constitutional obligation of the state legislatures to control a runaway Congress. Federal lawmakers will not propose term limits on themselves. The people of Johnson County have been clear that they want term limits on Congress, which is why we are delighted to see the Johnson County Commission Board pass this resolution.”
Article V of the Constitution of the United States specifies how amendments may be proposed; either two-thirds of both Houses of Congress or on the application of two-thirds of the state legislatures to force Congress to call a convention for proposing an amendment.
The Johnson County Commission Board resolution calls on the Tennessee Legislature to pass an Article V application to propose an amendment for congressional term limits. In Nashville, House Joint Resolution 8 is filed for that purpose. It passed the house chamber in 2021 and is looking for final passage through the state senate when the legislature reconvenes this month. The effort is spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, U.S. Term Limits.
