Rep. Dave Hall Files Term Limits Resolution in Indiana
Indianapolis, IN – State Representative Dave Hall (district 62) has filed House Joint Resolution 3 (HJR3) for Indiana to join the states calling for a convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
HJR3 has a groundswell of bipartisan support in the Indiana legislature as many lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have signed our term limits pledge. Coauthors of HJR3 include Rep. Chris Jeter, Rep. Michael Karickhoff, and Rep. Kyle Miller.
According to the latest RMG Research poll, 76% of likely voters in Indiana support term limits on Congress, including strong support among Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike.
U.S. Term Limits State Chair, Micah Beckwith, adds “It’s my sincere hope that the states will move forward with a term limits amendment. Without term limits, lifelong career politicians will continue to use the system for their personal gain. Term limits will be an effective mechanism to ensure that Washington will always work for the people and not the other way around.”
“The intention for our government was for citizens to actively participate in the democratic process,” said Philip Blumel, USTL President. “Unfortunately, career politicians in Congress have eroded that principle. Term limits will help ensure that public service is just that – a service to the public, not a career of self-interest. It’s time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent.”
HJR3 has been assigned to the House Judiciary Committee for a vote before it makes its way to the floor for a vote of the Indiana House of Representatives. After the measure passes the house floor, Indiana state Senator Travis Holdman will take the lead in the upper chamber.
Once passed in both the state house and senate this session, Indiana will join other states in the call for a national convention with the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. After 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions and approve the term limits amendment language, the measure must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
