Your calls and emails have attracted the legislature’s attention. But more work remains.
The 2018 legislative session began January 8. Since then, U.S. Term Limits has been at the capitol visiting lawmakers and mustering support for a bill calling for Georgia to participate in a Congressional Term Limits Proposal Convention.
The Good News
In the past week, we have picked up tremendous momentum by gaining additional supporters in the House. We also secured several more pledges for state house, state senate, and even from two gubernatorial candidates. See the press release here.
We have identified more than 20 House Reps, both Republican and Democrat, who would vote in favor IF the resolution came up for a vote. But we have also identified six opponents.
The Not So Good News
As of today, the term limits resolution is stuck in the House Rules committee. Career politicians don’t want this resolution to see the light of day.
They believe they know more than you, and they will ignore this resolution unless your calls to action impress upon them your demand for term limits!
Why We Fight
Term limits results in:
- The loss of the incumbency advantage (i.e. fundraising disparity and the name recognition developed over decades in office.)
- The loss of seniority privileges in exchange for a more merit based system.
- Reduction of special interest money funding reelection campaigns.
- Increased diversity and minority representation.
Effectively, ENDING career politicians in the institution responsible for getting nothing done, all while getting their wallets fat.
How You Can Help Impose Term Limits on Congress
This is where you must do your part. Please call me to see how you can get involved. Many people feel they are just one person, and that they alone cannot accomplish change. That is simply untrue. Your ability to volunteer even 5 minutes of your time to send an email or make a phone call can make a world of difference in the effort to have the term limits resolution passed. I promise your help will make all the difference.
Pick up the phone. Give me a call at 321-697-2895. Let’s get this done.
Sincerely,
James Alvarado
