Arizona House Passes Article V Term Limits Resolution
Phoenix, Arizona – U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the nationwide leader in the non-partisan movement to term limit elected officials, today praised the Arizona House of Representatives for passing HCR2024, a resolution supporting congressional term limits. The measure, based on USTL’s model legislation, specifies calling the convention for the sole purpose of proposing a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress.
HCR2024, sponsored by Rep. Darin Mitchell and cosponsored by Representatives Hernandez, Kern, Norgaard, and Payne passed the Arizona House of Representatives in a close vote Monday afternoon. With the success in the Arizona House, the resolution moves to the Arizona Senate where the U.S. Term Limits Arizona field team is laying the groundwork to pass the second chamber this session as well. A win will place Arizona at the forefront of states proposing an amendment for the sole purpose of placing Term Limits on the U.S. Congress.
According to Philip Blumel, President of U.S. Term Limits, “I am ecstatic that the Arizona House led the charge on this important issue and has passed the mantel over to the state Senate.” He continued, “Arizona representatives know that support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups. They also realize that the best chance we have of success is to bypass Congress through term limits convention applications passed through the state legislatures.”
In the last nationwide poll on term limits, conducted by McLaughlin & Associates in January 2018, term limits enjoys wide bipartisan support. An overwhelming 82% of voters approve of a Constitutional Amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress. Moreover, nearly three-in-four voters, 73%, are more likely to vote for a candidate for U.S. Congress who supports implementing term limits on Congress.
Once applications pass in 34 states, a term limits amendment proposal convention will be called. If accepted, the amendment would need ratification from 38 states to become part of the Constitution.
