U.S. Term Limits Activists Descend on Atlanta for Term Limits Lobby Day Wednesday, February 21st at 10am
Atlanta, Georgia — Term Limits on Congress is a hot topic in the Georgia legislature. Last year, the Senate passed a resolution (SR195) to apply for an amendment convention for the sole purpose of proposing term limits on U.S. Senators and House Representatives. This year, the measure is stuck in committee with little prospect of making it to the house floor without a successful vote from House Rules. Failure to pass the Georgia House will set the initiative back a year and undo all the progress achieved in the Georgia Senate.
“The goal is to give congressional term limits supporters the opportunity to meet with their legislators encouraging them to give SR195 some new life,” says James Alvarado, Georgia State Director for U.S. Term Limits. “We know this issue is important to 82% of Georgians, and the country as a whole,” continues Alvarado, “That’s why we are making it easy for the community to become engaged in the process and let their voices be heard.”
The organizer of “Term Limits Lobby Day” is U.S. Term Limits, the largest grassroots term limits advocacy group in the nation. The organization connects term limits activists with state legislators across the United States in an effort to pass Article V amendment convention applications. The meeting will launch in the Paul D. Coverdell building and supporters will be escorted to various legislator offices at the Capitol so they may speak with their own state representatives. Lunch will be provided and the session is expected to wrap up by 3PM.
WHEN: 10am Wednesday, February 21
WHERE: Paul D. Coverdell Building, Room 605, 18 Capitol Sq SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30334
According to Alvarado, “The term limits on Congress resolution is running out of time. If it doesn’t pass within the next month or so, we may just have to start back at square one in the 2019 legislative session.” Alvarado concludes, “We need as many supporters as possible to contact their Georgia House members to push this forward to a successful vote on the House floor.”
According to the last nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, conducted in January 2018, term limits enjoys wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis states, “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups. An overwhelming 82% of voters approve of a Constitutional Amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress.”
