Maine Senate Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress

Augusta, ME — Today, the Maine Senate Veterans and Legal Affairs committee passed SP705 for Maine term limits on Congress with 8 yeas to 5 nays. The legislators who voted in favor of the resolution were Senators Brenner, Hickman, Timberlake and Representatives Williams, Andrews, Rudnicki, Supica and Boyer.

The effort, sponsored by State Senator Rick Bennett, is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit U.S. Term Limits.

The most recent poll conducted by RMG Research, shows that 76% of likely voters in Maine support term limits on Congress, including strong support across party lines. 78% of Republicans, 84% of Democrats, and 77% of independents in the poll support this important election reform.

“Without term limits, it didn’t take me long to see how decisions are made and how power accumulates in the hands of a few,” said Senator Bennett, the senate resolution’s prime sponsor. He added, “only through action in state legislatures across this glorious nation, are we going to actually get this needed change.”

U.S. Term Limits President Philip Blumel commended the members of the committee who voted “ought to pass” on our resolution saying, “The people of Maine are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. They know that Congress won’t set term limits on itself. Therefore, it is the obligation of the states to do so.”

The next stop for SP705 will be a vote soon of the entire senate chamber. If passed in both the state house and senate this session, Maine will join other states in the call to convene the states for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic and approve the term limits amendment, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
