Strong Support for Term Limits Among Michigan Candidates

Bloomfield Hills, Michigan – U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national movement to limit terms for elected officials, is currently gathering support from state and federal lawmakers across the nation. Its mission is to enact term limits on Congress via an amendment to the U.S. Constitution and to implement and defend term limits on state legislatures. Several Michigan state and federal candidates, from multiple party affiliations, have pledged to support this effort.

Federal Candidates

The candidates for federal office who signed the congressional pledge are U.S. Senate candidates John James and Marcia Squier and U.S. House candidates Rocky Raczkowski (District 11) and Matt Morgan (District 1).

The U.S. Term Limits congressional pledge is provided to every announced candidate for federal office. It reads, “I pledge that as a member of Congress I will co-sponsor and vote for the U.S. Term Limits amendment of three (3) House terms and two (2) Senate terms and no longer limit.”

State Candidates

The state candidates for senate who committed their support to passing a resolution through the Michigan legislature for an Article V convention (so the states may propose the term limits on Congress amendment) are Joseph Bogdan (District 10), Bob Genetski (District 26), Laurette DeBoer (district 30), Jon Bumstead (District 34), Terry Whitney (District 12), Mike Saari (District 15), Dan Oesch (District 29) and Cary Urka (District 35). Also proud to sign the Article V term limits pledge are Michigan House candidates Kevin Tatulyan (District 9), Matt Marko (District 44), Miha Todd (District 55), Clyde Thomas (District 67), Clarisa Trevino (District 71), RJ Regan (District 73), Michael Pratt (District  81), Michael Bosch (District 88), Madhu Anderson (District 93) and Carolyn Cater (District 101).

The U.S. Term Limits amendment convention pledge is provided to state candidates and members of state legislatures. It reads, “I pledge that as a member of the state legislature, I will support and vote for the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the limited purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”

Two others running for Michigan House of Representatives, State Rep. Steven Johnson (District 72) and candidate Paul Taros (District 40) have committed their support to not lengthen or abolish the current term limits on the Michigan state legislature.

USTL President, Philip Blumel, commented on the pledges, saying, “This support of term limits shows that there are lawmakers who are willing to listen to the majority of voters who want term limits. America needs state, local, and federal governments that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

In the 1995 case, Thornton v. U.S. Term Limits, the Supreme Court of the United States opined that only a Constitutional Amendment could limit the terms of U.S. Senators and House Representatives. Once proposed, the amendment must be ratified by 38 states.

Blumel noted, “More than 82% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. These candidates know this and are willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”

According to the last nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, conducted in January 2018, term limits enjoy wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis states, “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups.”
