North Carolina Senate Files Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Raleigh, NC — North Carolina Senator Todd Johnson (district 35) has filed a resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 487 (SJR487) for term limits on Congress. The measure initiates an application to participate in an amendment proposal convention specific to limiting the time a member of Congress may hold office. The measure is being spearheaded by U.S. Term Limits (U.S.T.L.), the only national nonprofit focused solely on term limits. The primary sponsors of SJR487 are Senators Johnson, Settle and Galey along with co-sponsors Senators Britt, Burgin, Jarvis, Moffitt, Sanderson and Alexander.
The North Carolina House passed the joint measure (HJR151) last month. SJR487, if passed, would put Congress on notice that North Carolina plans to invoke Article V of the U.S. Constitution whereby state legislatures can team up for a convention to propose a congressional term limits amendment.
Philip Blumel, the president of U.S.T.L, commended the sponsors for working on such an important electoral reform. Blumel said, “The people of North Carolina are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. By using Article V to term limit Congress, the states can restore citizen representation on Capitol Hill.”
Blumel also noted the high popularity of congressional term limits in North Carolina, which receives 76% support from Republicans, 77% support from Democrats and 72% support from independents nationwide, according to the most recent national poll by RMG Research.
Once SJR487 passes the state legislature this session, North Carolina will be added to the growing list of states calling for a convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. After 34 state legislatures apply for the convention and a term limits amendment proposal is approved, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
