Oklahoma Senate Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Oklahoma City, OK — Today, the Oklahoma Senate Rules committee passed HJR1032 for Oklahoma to join other states in calling for a convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution with a vote of 15 yeas and 1 nay. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits.
The most recent poll conducted by RMG Research, shows that 73% of likely voters in Oklahoma support term limits on Congress, including strong support across party lines. 80% of Republicans, 81% of Democrats, and 62% of independents in the poll support this important election reform.
U.S. Term Limits President Philip Blumel commended Senator Bergstrom for putting forth the resolution. Blumel said, “The people of Oklahoma are lucky to have public servants who see what is going on in D.C. and are willing to take action to fix it. They know that Congress won’t set term limits on itself. Therefore, it is the obligation of the states to do so.”
HJR1032 will now move to the senate floor for a final vote. If passed in both the state house and senate this session, Oklahoma will join other states in the call to convene the states for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic and approve the term limits amendment, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
