Pennsylvania House Representative Jared Solomon Introduces Term Limits Resolution
for Congress and SCOTUS
Philadelphia, PA – Rep. Jared Solomon (District 202) is leading the way in Pennsylvania to term limit members of Congress and U.S. Supreme Court justices. A House Co-sponsorship Memoranda was introduced to members on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
Solomon’s resolution will function as two separate and distinct applications to Congress calling for a convention for proposing amendments under Article V of the U.S. Constitution that would restrict each convention to only consider an amendment that limit the number of terms for members of Congress or establish and limit the number of terms for U.S. Supreme Court Justices.
“The Supreme Court needs a major cleanup,” Solomon said. “Public opinion polling shows that support for the Supreme Court is at its lowest ever and a strong majority of voters across party lines want term limits for Supreme Court Justices and Members of Congress. With regular turnover on the bench, the Court would better reflect public values and keep monied interests from influencing unaccountable judges with a lifetime appointment.”
According to Nick Tomboulides, Executive Director of USTL, “There are two ways to propose an amendment for term limits: by Congress or by the state legislatures in an Article V convention. That is why state legislators in Pennsylvania’s General Assembly need to pass this resolution to allow the States to discuss and propose these amendments.” Once proposed, the amendment must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
Tomboulides notes, “More than 82% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Solomon knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”
According to the latest Pulse Research opinion poll, Pennsylvania voters overwhelmingly support term limits for members of Congress. Support for term limits is broad across all political and demographic groups. An overwhelming 79% of voters approve of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will place term limits on U.S. Senators and U.S. House Representatives. Large majorities also say that Congress members stay in power for too long, and that they’re more likely to support state lawmakers who help advance congressional term limits.
