Kentucky Rep. William Lawrence files resolution to term limit Congress
Frankfort, KY – State representative William Lawrence has filed House Joint Resolution 8 (HJR8) for Kentucky to join the states calling for a convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
According to the latest McLaughlin & Associates poll, 84% of likely voters in Kentucky support term limits on Congress, including strong support among Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike.
HJR8 has a groundswell of bipartisan support in the Kentucky legislature. Several state lawmakers committed their support by signing a pledge to cosponsor Rep. Lawrence’s resolution.
“I am proud to fill this resolution. As a political outsider, I see the importance of term limits in our representation. I do not believe our forefathers ever intended for these offices to be held by career politicians.” says Rep. Lawrence.
If passed in both the state house and senate this session, Kentucky will join other states in the call to for a national convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions and approve the term limits amendment language, the measure must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
