Senator Jarrett Coleman Receives Plaque and Sponsors Resolution for a Congressional Term Limits Amendment
Harrisburg, PA —Pennsylvania State Senator Jarrett Coleman (District 16) was recently recognized for supporting Term Limits for Congress by signing the U.S. Term Limits Pledge, which reads “that as a member of the state legislature, I will cosponsor, vote for, and defend the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the sole purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”
Several volunteers joined Kenn Quinn of U.S. Term Limits to present Senator Coleman the “Champion of Term Limits” plaque, which reads, “In recognition of a steadfast commitment to restore citizen government through term limits.” Senator Coleman has committed to being the lead sponsor of the U.S. Term Limits Article V convention application, which is limited to proposing an amendment to set a limit on the number of terms that a person may be elected as a member of the U.S. House and Senate. The Article V convention application does not specify the number of terms as that will be determined by the commissioners appointed to the convention by the state legislatures.
Sen. Coleman said he sponsored the application because “The American public overwhelmingly supports a constitutional amendment enacting term limits on Congress. An overwhelming 79% of voters in Pennsylvania approve of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will place term limits on U.S. Senators and U.S. House Representatives.
In protecting their own self-interest, career politicians in Washington, D.C. failed to act. The American people are sick and tired of the corruption and dysfunction in Congress. It’s up to state legislatures to get the ball rolling, and that’s why I have sponsored a resolution to have Pennsylvania join with other states to propose a Congressional Term Limits Amendment. It is time we take the power away from the career politicians in Congress and return it to the people.”
Many fellow legislators have pledged their support for the application by signing the U.S. Term Limits Pledge. It’s noteworthy that term limits enjoy strong bipartisan support in Pennsylvania. According to the latest Pulse Opinion Research poll, 79% of likely voters in Pennsylvania support term limits for Congress, with strong support among Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike.
It is important to note that once an amendment is proposed by Congress or by the state legislatures at the convention, it must be ratified by three-fourths (38) of the states to be added as an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Senator Coleman’s efforts and the support of many other legislators show that the push for term limits on Congress is gaining momentum in Pennsylvania.
