Senator George Wise Files Term Limits Resolution in Kentucky
Louisville, KY – Senator George Wise (District 34) has filed Senate Joint Resolution 17 (SJR17) to add Kentucky to the list of states calling on Congress to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Like the other state efforts, SJR17 makes it clear to Congress that if they fail, Kentucky and its fellow states will propose the amendment themselves. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
SJR17 has a groundswell of support in the Kentucky legislature. Many state lawmakers committed their support by signing a pledge to cosponsor Senator Wise’s resolution.
“It’s time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent, ” said Philip Blumel, USTL President. “Term limits will help restore trust in our government and ensure that power is returned to the hands of the citizens.”
SJR17 will be assigned to a committee for a vote before it makes its way to the senate floor. Once SJR17 passes both the house and senate chambers, Kentucky will join other states in the call for a national convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress.
Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions and approve the term limits amendment language, the measure must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
