Tennessee Man Walking Cross-country Presented with State Flag at Capitol
Nashville, Tennessee — Today at the steps of the state capitol, State Rep. Mike Sparks (Smyrna) presented the Tennessee flag to a local man currently walking cross-country to raise awareness for term limits on Congress. Tim “Izzy” Israel, of Hartsville, began his trek in December 2020. Izzy’s walk has taken him from Key West through Alabama to Nashville. He is heading north through Clarksville to Kentucky. With more than 1,000 behind him, Izzy has 2,500 miles to go to reach his destination of Cape Flattery, Washington.
A longtime professional technician to some of Nashville’s top country music artists, Izzy lost his job during the pandemic. He wasn’t originally scheduled to return to Tennessee until after he completed his journey to Washington state. However, he realized he could meet with state legislators to draw attention to the issue and to thank them for passing a recent state resolution for term limits on Congress in his home state. HJR8, sponsored by State Rep. Chris Todd (Jackson) passed the Tennessee General Assembly and is in the state senate awaiting concurrence.
“It was an honor to present a Tennessee state flag to Izzy,” said Rep. Sparks. “His efforts to bring awareness to U.S. Term Limits and advocate for the common man is appreciated. I wish him Godspeed on his trek across our great country. I think our founding fathers and our greatest generation who fought and died for this nation would be proud.” Sparks, a strong proponent of term limits on Congress, is a co-sponsor of HJR8.
The flag presented to Izzy had been flown over the state capitol dome earlier this week. When asked about the presentation, he said, “Getting the Tennessee state flag, which represents so many people coming together in common representation, has given me a huge appreciation of accomplishments our state has achieved.”
U.S. Term Limits (USTL), a national non-profit, learned about Izzy 800 miles into his journey. Impressed by his determination, USTL’s Deputy Field Director Jeff Tillman has provided ground support allowing Izzy to find a safe place to sleep and to lighten his 50 pound backpack load. Updates on Izzy’s journey can be found on his website at whereisizzy.com.
