Term Limits Resolution Filed in South Carolina
Columbia, SC – Representative Cal Forrest (district 39) and Senator Rex Rice (district 2) have filed House Concurrent Resolution 3008 (HCR3008) and Senate Concurrent Resolution 105 (SCR105) for South Carolina to join the states calling for a convention for proposing a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
According to the latest RMG Research poll, 79% of registered voters in South Carolina support term limits on Congress, including strong support among Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike.
Both these resolutions have a groundswell of support in the South Carolina legislature. Several state lawmakers committed their support by signing a pledge to cosponsor Rep. Forrest’s resolution and Senator Rex Rice’s resolution.
“It’s time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent, ” said Philip Blumel, USTL President. “Term limits will help restore trust in our government and ensure that power is returned to the hands of the citizens.”
HCR3008 or SCR105 will be assigned to a committee for a vote before it makes its way to the floor.
If the resolution is passed in both the house and senate chambers this session, South Carolina will join other states in the call to for a national convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions and approve the term limits amendment language, the measure must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
