Today Florida State Senate President Joe Negron announced he will be resigning from office in November with two years left on his term.
Negron’s reason? His strong belief in eight-year term limits.
Due to census reapportionment and a decision by Florida’s Supreme Court, Negron found himself in a rare position: legally able to serve an extra two years in office beyond Florida’s eight-year term limit.
But Negron has instead chosen to follow the example of George Washington, by giving up power instead of grabbing for more:
“We have term limits for a reason. Eight is enough,” Negron told TCPalm Wednesday. “I support term limits, and I think people should serve their time in public office, and then when that time concludes, they can return to the private sector.”
“I believe in a citizen Legislature where women and men from all walks of life serve for a reasonable period of time and then return to the private sector,” he added. “I have done my very best to fight for my community in Tallahassee, and November is the right time to retire from my service in the Legislature.”
Throughout his tenure in Tallahassee, Negron has always walked the walk on term limits. As a member of the State House, he was instrumental in protecting our Eight is Enough law. As a Senator, he passed two key resolutions for congressional term limits, including the Term Limits Convention in 2016. That cemented Florida’s status as a national leader in the movement to fix Washington.
Of course, Negron also signed the U.S. Term Limits pledge and was named a Defender of Term Limits in 2015.
Most politicians hate term limits for obvious reasons. They never want to see their personal gravy train end. Negron has always been different. He’s a statesman who fights to protect citizen-led government. As a sendoff, we want to say thanks. Contact Senator Negron by either phone or email and tell him: “thanks for always standing up for term limits.”
