U.S. Term Limits Congratulates Rauner, Will Support His Efforts for Term Limits
Palm Beach, FL – U.S. Term Limits, the group that assisted Governor-Elect Bruce Rauner in a ballot drive to establish term limits on Illinois legislators, congratulated Rauner today on his victory and pledged to work alongside the new administration in delivering term limits to the people of Illinois.
USTL President Philip Blumel says the judges that threw “Term Limits and Reform” off Illinois’ ballot before the election did a major disservice to the nearly 600,000 people who signed a petition to hold a vote on term limits.
“Since politically-connected judges denied the people of Illinois a vote on this issue, Bruce Rauner must now use his pulpit as Governor to move the legislature into action,” Blumel said. “U.S. Term Limits will support that effort or any other to clean up Springfield with serious term limits.”
High polling for term limits in Illinois indicates that citizens are fed up with dysfunction from state lawmakers and view more rotation in office as the answer. The most recent survey on the subject from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute showed that 80 percent of Illinois voters favor term limits on the General Assembly.
Blumel believes the lopsided party breakdown in the legislature will only help – not hinder – the cause for term limits. “It makes sense for Rauner to work with Democrats on this, because term limits have majority support with both parties,” he noted. “Voters will appreciate both sides coming together to do what is best for Illinois.”
