WA-3 Poll: Herrera Beutler Leads, but is Vulnerable on Term Limits
Olympia, WA – According to a new poll conducted by RMG Research, Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (R) leads her Democratic opponent Carolyn Long, but Herrera Beutler has an achilles heel: her opposition to congressional term limits.
The poll, which was conducted from July 29-August 4th, found that Herrera Beutler narrowly leads Long 44% to 40%, which is within the margin of error. But when voters are asked who they would support if Long were to sign the U.S. Term Limits pledge, which Herrera Beutler opposes, Long would jump out to a five point lead (42% to 37%).
If Long signs the term limits pledge, she would gain 5 points among Republicans and 11 points among independent voters. Also, undecided voters – currently 16% of the electorate – would break for Long at a 4-to-1 rate if she came out for term limits. According to the poll, Herrera Beutler has done an expert job concealing her opposition to term limits from voters. 92% of district voters either don’t know what Herrera Beutler’s position is on term limits or incorrectly believe she supports it. That presents a major opportunity for Long to make inroads with voters by campaigning on the issue.
The survey of 500 registered voters in Washington’s 3rd congressional district was conducted online by RMG Research, Inc. from July 29th-August 4th using a representative sample to reflect the district’s population of registered voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points. RMG Research is owned and operated by Scott Rasmussen.
